Prime Vision R&D is applied to video OCR
Prime Vision’s headquarters in Delft, Holland is a fertile ground of OCR innovation. High investment in research and development is at the core of this company’s ethos, enabling it to provide customers with effective application-specific solutions. And a good example is Prime Vision’s recent development of a system for reading subtitles from video.
Although highly-efficient hand written character reading is perhaps the greatest selling point of Prime Vision’s OCR, the company is also renowned for its exceptionally strong region-of-interest (ROI) finding techniques. These provide the sign posts that tell the OCR where to decode and therefore make a significant contribution to the system’s high read rates.
Efficient ROI finding is also fundamental to the specially developed system that automatically locates and recognises the subtitles embedded in video frames. The main challenges facing developers is the efficient separation of the subtitle text from the complex background scene also distinguishing it from other overlaid text.
Commenting on the achievement Prime Vision’s Mark Ryder said: “As is the case with all our product enhancements, video subtitle decoding will now be the subject of continuous development. However, the initial results have allowed us to confirm to the customer that our OCR has all the features necessary for successful video OCR.”
